I am sure at one point someone must have said something that approximates to:

"The spiritual rot in societies stems from their disquiet at the world they help to create and maintain day by day against their own long term interests."

I am not sure whom but I'm willing to credit Marx since we all know their is nothing new under the sun, ergo that sentiment can not be my own.
